They do & it's called middening. This usually happens in a multicat household or when there are other cats in the area, as a way of marking territory.

Cats usually dig it up in their own garden because a black and white cat next door to me always digs up her mess in her own garden, but leaves it open in my garden! Nuisance she is too.
