Given that the normal gestation period for bitches is 62 days,is it common for a bitch to be over this time,particularly if she"s a maiden ?

Actually its 63 days, and they can go up to a week over. Any more and you either have a big problem, or there are no puppies (or maybe you got the dates wrong). The sperm can live in a bitch for up to a week, which explains the 'delay' .
