Does anyone know why putting butter onto cats paws stops them from roaming????

If you had slippery stuff on your feet would you want to go far?
wouldn't work with mine...they'd just lick the butter off and head out anyway!
I think it leaves a trail that they can sniff to get back home - my friends did it when they let their cats out for the first time after moving home.
My aunt swears by putting butter on a cats paws. She says it's always worked for her.
