Nasty cat fight :( Help!

Last night, around 9.30pm, there was the worst noises from a cat in a fight i have ever heard!
I ran to the front door, opened it and there was a huge white & ginger cat fighting with my Smokie Jo (oldest male cat, 3.5 years and pure muscle!) It was so horrible, I was shouting at them but they wouldnt stop, it was about 2 foot infront of me on the door step.
In the end I called out for my partner who came running and it was only after he shouted a couple of times that they stopped, and ran in different directions, leaving white fur all over the step!
I went out looking for Smokie straight away, couldnt find him, but he still hasnt come home? Im getting worried that he may be scared to come to the front door, he spends half his time in, half out, but always comes in for the night.
He is a big softie at heart, and although there was white fur all over the place, I really dont think he came out Ok as the other cat had his claws right in his head and Smokie didnt sound in a good way at all.
What can I do to gey him to come back? :(

If you do find him keep an eye out for abscesses on him as cat bites are full of bacteria. One of my cats got bitten by another cat and became quite seriously ill as I missed the abscess due to her being longhaired. The vet said it was the biggest abscess he had ever seen on a cat.She had to have a large portion of skin removed from her rump and was on antibiotics for weeks.Good luck in locating your missing kitty.xx
Yea, I have done that, our house backs on to a huge park with a lake & woods, so finding him out there would be pretty impossible!
He likes to be the man of the house, or seem it, but hes the most scared of them all, he hides & cries with fireworks (the other cats are not bothered by them) he loves cuddles and is the softest puss going!

Sorry to hear about your cat's 'domestic'.
Cats are territorial animals, and every male has to defend his territory sooner or later. As the incumbent cat, you can be sure he gave better than he got!
Remember, cat fights are as much about image as actually inflicting damage. A lot of the screeching and yowling is designed to 'talk up' the yowler, a sort of feline "D'you want some ...?', so he may not be badly hurt - fights always look and sound worse than they are, sepcially if your pet is in there.
He will come back when he's calmed down, and the other cats have lost interest. He'll re-mark his territory, and if they come back, he will deal with them.
Don't worry too much, cats are resourceful, when he's calmed down and had a sulk, he'll be back for some food.

Oh dear wiggal dont they worry us. First thing is to make sure the intruder cat is not near your house, Smokie Jo will be some where about and he needs a clear entrance to your house.Cats as you know get very upset when other cats come on their patch, there is nothing worse than a bully on the patch.Hope he soon comes home and when he does keep him in a bit, so he can have some peace.g
Ive just thought, about 6 months ago, a cat trap was put out 2 houses down from us because a white cat had attacked the neighbours cat and he ended up in the vets for a while>
The same cat also had a go at her labrador puppy, and hurt her husband when he tried to intervene.
She came up one evening and warned us of it and said a trap was to be put out so if it went in, a note could be attached to its collar to let its owner know what it was like.
I didnt hear any further about it then, but im hoping its not that cat come back :(

It attacked her husband after he was out with the pup, came across their cat fighting with 'it' and it the went for the pup and her husbands leg.
We have decided that one way or another, we need to get this cat, or find its owners. we have said that even if we have to catch it, take it to the vets and pay for it to be neutered between us, that is the only way we can think to stop it coming round and attacking everything in sight!

Just to let you all know, Smokie has just returned home, seeming very quiet and just wanting some food and to cuddle up in a corner!

As andy-hughes says cat fights are often pretty scary sounding.
My two have fights - it's like a rolling ball of spitting fur whizzing across the room. I will shout at them and they both look at me saying "What? We're playing, you're disturbing us".
I hope you find Smokie Joe and he gets his territory sorted out, all the cats will have to join together against the intruder. Getting the intruder neutered is a great idea.

If we were to catch the intruder and take him to the vets, would we be able to get him neutered as we are not his owners?
We really dont know what else we can do!
I suggested, maybe if we could get a picture of the cat, we could put up posters around the estate with a pcture of the cat, asking for the owner, or anyone who knows the owner to contact us so we could let them know what is going on?

If you think that it is a stray or feral cat 'shop him' to the Cats Protection. They will catch him, take him away and neuter him. I am not sure how they advertise for the cats real owner though.

It is possible that the cats owners don't know that he is a thug, or maybe they just don't care. Our little angels turn into little devils some times. I was sound asleep until Frankie decided that he wanted "foooood" and woke me up!

I'm sorry - but cat fights are normal. I know it's not nice if it's YOUR pet who's in the firing line, but there could be many reasons for the nasty one being as he is. Get a magnetic cat flap on your door, and then only Smokie'll be able to get back in. I also had a cat called Smokey. He was grabbed by someone and taken to the CPL. To our horror, he'd been neutered when we finally got him back, which was something we didn't want at all - but it was too late. Had he been at this place for much longer, he would've been put to sleep. I'm sure you wouldn't really wish this upon the aggressive cat?
Ta Wolf, he came home about 45 minutes ago! he is very jumpy and unsure of things though so after checking him over im leaving him to settle down abit.

Smokie is my oldest & biggest cat, and he lost the battle last night, if one of my girls went out, or my Splodgey, he wouldnt be walking away from the fight.
My neighbour has said that as far as she knows, it is not a stray, and its not just coming round for cat fights!

I DID read, Wiggal, and yes, the idea of putting up posters to try and find the owner of this animal is a good idea, but the poor creature could be ill. I'm not defending its actions (and no, btw - our cat was a beautiful-tempered, sloppy old half-Persian), and as an animal over, I can understand your concerns, but continuous attacks on other animals - plus humans - makes me think that this cat could be injured or unwell. If it's wild, then it can be excused for its behaviour, however horrible that sounds. Of course you want to get this stopped, and if no one reclaims it, then an animal hospital may be able to catch it and take it for examination. I could almost hear the panic in your voice as you typed, but I thought it sounded a little OTT, whereas Daffy, who obviously knows what it's like to have a pet injured by another, gave calm & clear advice. Do you have any children?
Can I just ask what is OTT about wanting to protect my animals from something that I know is fully capable of seriously injuring them?

I adore all my animals, they are the most important thing to me (dont tell my fella that!!) and I will do everything I can to keep them save & well.

Wiggal - really - I'm not trying to fall out with you. I understand how you feel about your animals. I'm sure you weren't intending to cause any tension - and none felt - but you DID come over as rather terse. No disrespect to you, but I was asking about children in case they were in any danger of being attacked by this animal, also. I have 4 cats of my own, amongst numerous other pets, and can read behaviour almost as well as I can read human beings. Perhaps it's best just to say that I hope you get the problem cleared up quickly, but remember, in different circumstances, our own softie cats could turn vicious as well. We once had the most delightful black cat called Candy. You couldnt've wished for a more friendly cat - until she developed an abscess. No one could go near her, & it was heartbreaking to watch the poor tortured animal, terrified & suffering. We eventually got her to the vet, who treated her & she lived a good few more years, but whittling over your little darling isn't going to help. He'll pick up on your worry, & probably become so timid that he can't fight his way out of a paper bag. Be determined to trace the culprit's owner/s, and I hope there's a good ending to this story for you.
Hope Smokie's happier today. I know it's a bit late but I've always found the best way to split up a cat fight is to chuck water over them. Sounds nasty but the cats will run and if you do it a few times they may start relating the water with the fight or the cat they were fighting and it could put them off. Never try to intervene physically, my cat nearly took my arm off when I tried it!

If you manage to trace the owners and they refuse to do anything about the cat (to be honest what can they do - it may be already neutred, might not make any difference if it is neutred, they could keep it in I suppose - but they are unlikely to), don't think you can make them pay any vet bills as owners are not responsible legally for any damage a cat does.
Also if the cat then goes 'missing' the owners know who to blame!
To be totally honest if I was in that situation (where my cats etc. were in realistic fear of their lives) I would get together with my neighbours and the cat would 'disappear' quietly to a cats home many many miles away! Sadly if it could not be rehomed and had to be put to sleep then so be it - better that than one of your own cats being fatally injured and crawling away to the woodland and dying in agony.
Also if the cat then goes 'missing' the owners know who to blame!
