I am trying to encourage my nearly 8 year old grandson to read more and have seen books, particularly the Magic Tree House series, by the above author recommended, would they be too young for that age group? He reads well but is reluctant to spend time reading.

I don't know those books but I do know that boys of that age are usually quite keen to read the Adventures of Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey. They really appeal to their sense of toilet humour! Also things like Beano and Dandy annuals, comics don't feel like proper reading to a child!
The Magic Tree House books are listed here in the U.S. as reading level 2.3 (3 months into 2nd grade), which is 7 years old. So they are definitely in line with your grandson's age. Kids like these books sometimes to an obsessive extent! I second the recommendation for Capt. Underpants and also the books of Jon Scieska. Silly, guy-oriented fun books that kids enjoy.

Many thanks for your answer, it was just the information I was looking for. The Jon Sciezka books look a good bet too. Thank you.
