cats gone missing

One of our cats Chester is missing, he went off Tuesday night (as usual) and hasn't been seen since - he usually goes out all night and appears the next morning but he hasn't come back. I've gone out looking and have called and called but no sign, I even called our local vets and no one has brought him in.
Am I over reacting? I've made some missing posters up and will put them around our estate tonight, but I really don't know what else to do.
He is chipped.

I definately don't think you are over reacting!
My cat only went missing for just over 24 hours and I was putting posters up, walking the streets in the rain etc etc
I know people will say that he hasn't been gone long but at the end of the day, you know your cat and if this is not usual behaviour, then you know.
When mine went missing, I knew straight away because he didn't come in for breakfast and he never misses a meal!! People said 'oh, cats always wander off', which might well be true but mine never does!
I know how you feel and I'll keep my fingers crossed that he comes back. I think my Barney had been shut in a shed or garage when he disappeared as he had oil on his paws. When he did return he was really clingy, he even sat on my knee everytime I went to the loo so I think it scared him a bit. Hopefully Chester is shut in somewhere also and will come back soon in one piece.

Cats do wander, but they are creatures of routine. If he never usually stays away this long then he is probably stuck somewhere. Have you checked the local trees?

I did the same as Cheekychops - Monty went out one morning & didn't come home for breakfast, still didn't come back that night & I went into a complete panic. Posters everywhere, phoned the vet, local animal sanctuary, everyone! Searched all over, called him - no response. Went to work the next day, feeling really upset (cried on the phone to a couple of people too). Then....when I got home that afternoon, the little monkey was sitting on the stairs as though nothing had happened. (I left the cat flap open for him).
Ask people to check their sheds &c, just in case he's been shut in somewhere. I do hope he turns up. Let us know, won't you? K xx

I'm with the others Cheekystar, Diego is exactly the same, goes out all night and then home for brekkie but he once went wandering for a few days. I was convinced something awful had happened and was traipsing around the estate for ages trying to find him then the next day I got in from work and he was sat on the doorstep looking fairly impateint as if to say "Do you realise how long I have been waiting to get in?!". Thankfully, he hasn't changed and was just keen to be fed; he slept almost solidly for two days so I think he must have been on some kind of adventure but he is fine. I am sure Chester will be too x x x

There is probably some sort of kittie networking going on. One goes off on his travels and after two days comes home only to be showered with extra love and food.
Then all his buddies do the same thing. They are sly and conniving little monsters. I have one trying to lie on my keyboard as I type. :-)

No you are not over reacting but cats are great survivors so don't get too worried yet. The posters are a good idea. We did that and a neighbour found our cat locked in someones garage after four days. He was thirsty but otherwise ok. Prehaps when it is quiet later tonight and sound carries better you could try calling him again. If he is locked in anywhere you may hear him meowing. Also here in Bristol the council records all the bodies of domestic animals found on the roads, so it might worth your while contacting your local council just incase the worst has hppened. One of my cats went missing once, when I went around the neighbours she was stuck in someones shed, cried my eyes out when I found her. You say this is a male cat, sometimes they go out on the town, so to speak. I am sure he will turn up as though nothing has happened. Keep us all posted. Cats own us, we dont own them.

Don't despair.
My friend in Germany has 2 cats - one went missing, and she spent two awful weeks looking for him - same as you - radio, posters, etc.
He turned up in the cellar of a local house - the caretaker had gone on holiday and closed all the windows before he left. The cat was dehydrated, hungry, but alive. My friend was nearly in a worse state.
Try canvassing your neighbours to see if anyone may have accidentally locked him in. Try flyers through doors also.
Do you have a local radio station?

I agree with the others, he is probably stuck somewhere and will be home soon. A few years ago I was going off on my hols with friends and mum was going round to my flat to water the plants mid week (I didn't have any pest then), when she went round - four days after I had gone away she opened the door to have this black cat come flying out at her! To this day I have no idea how he go in there - I lived in a first floor maisonette, apart from he ran in when I took my suitcase to the car then went back to lock the door. Anyhoo, I was one of those cat trappers! (accidentally of course!) But I am sure Chester has probably only done the same thing.
