I noticed that a herd of cows were lying down on their side - half on right side half on left - is this optional or are they "handed"

If you tossed a coin 50 times you will probably find that it will show close to 25 heads or 50%.
considering they only use their legs for walking there is no need for them to favour one side like with humans. Just the luck of the draw as to which side their fat ar*es lay.
I believe most mammals are left handed except humans, who are predominantly right-handed. So always milk a cow from the right side so it is not so likely to kick you.
They'll change side every few hours or so - if they don't, they can get permanent damge to their legs.
as other guy says they change every few hours.i believe digestion has something to do with it too.much like humans really.
