This afternoon my niece dropped in along with her 5yr old son and some of his friends, while watching the baby goldfish in the pond one of the kids asked me which was the "mummy" fish and which was the "daddy" I know the female fish is normally bigger but is there an easy way to tell them apart? Also I know some fish such as roach & bream will some times inter-breed but will koi & goldfish?

Male goldfish have develop white pimples on their gills in the breeding season. It is hard to see in a pond, unless you can get close to them.

Koi and goldfish will freely interbreed and the young are generally sterile, indicating that the two are separate species. Koi can easily be identified from goldfish by the presence of barbels.
