Over the past couple of weeks our large ghost carp has jumped out of the pond and beached itself on the patio when the filter pump is turned off for cleaning. Today it jumped out three times in a very short period of time. Why is it doing this? It could die!

Im not sure, my neighbours carp jumped out of the pond while he was at work, i saw it but couldnt get it as it went into another garden! It was 10hours later when he got it back,it was still alive and is to this day!
we had some golden orfe jump out of the pond once, the man at the aquatic centre told us it was because they had been moved. It could be trying to get oxygen, do you leave an air pump on?
Carp do jump to catch flies. It may be that with the pump turned off, the surface of the water is calmer and he can see them better.
Hi, you need to put a net over your pond!!!! It'll stop the herons as well.

Thanks all. Lisa - we do have a net as herons visit regularly. Somehow the carp goes straight through it - this happened while I stood watching! OK, we'll have to look at a tighter weave. It's still odd as the pump was off all winter and there was no net on the pond and the carp didn't jump. It must be linked with warmer water in some way.
lol....good luck!!!! is he a 'biggun'? We were watching a bloke trying to catch some ghosties yesterday....pmsl..... Might go again today just for the fun!!!! Good luck hun!
Do you have a good aquatics shop near you? Ask for their help.....all free!!!!
