A puppy and chooks???

I have chooks (good layers) but i am thinking about getting a dog...(silly i know) I was just wondering my chooks rome free all day and i dont want to have to lock them up because of a puppy. My friend brought around her bran new puppie one day and well he met my chooks (chased them around my yard) this caused them so much stress they both did not lay for a day.
Is there any way i could have both without causing my chocks to much stress and how could i teach my new puppy not to chase or eat them???
