I dont know how this question came up but we are now having a discussion in the office about it. Does anyone know what the proper name for the noise a monkey makes is?

Different species make different sounds. As Tiny says, they can chatter. They can also screech, growl, whimper, howl, snarl, whuffle, hoot, and even snore.

I'd go with chattering if you were looking for a general term. We talk about pigs grunting and owls hooting etc., though most animals have a bit of a repertoire. I suppose chattering would be the first thing you'd think of vis a vis monkeys
