My New Cat Drinks a Lot

I have recently got a new cat from Wood Green, she is 1 years old and the vet said she was healthy. I have notice that shes drinks a lot, I have had cats in the past and have never seen them drink so much and it has got me rather concerned.

Do I need to take her to the vet to make sure she is ok?

Hi, if she's already been checked by a vet I wouldn't worry too much. Some one posted this site a while ago though....try that.

Is she on a dry food diet? If she has suddenly changed from wet to dry food then she will need to drink more water as she wont be getting liquid from her meals.
If her diet hasn't changed then I'm with divegirl. If you are really worried then double checking at the vet wont do any harm (other than to your bank balance!)

We have four cats, and they all drink very different amounts. Trumpton prefers puddle water, Jess prefers green water, Campbell drinks anything, and our new kitten Robbie prefers his own bowl. As she's been checked out already, I wouldn't worry too much.

it would sound like diabetes in an older cat, but I'm sure the Wood Green vet would have spotted that. My elderly Siamese will drink from all sorts of manky-looking garden puddles, in large quantities, and he's just passed his 6-monthly MOT. I'm sure she'll be right as rain (sorry!) and good luck with her

If I was you I'd still go ahead and get her seen by a vet, Ive seen many cats with kidney problems drink lots of water and the vet at Wood Green would only have done a basic health check on her..

I know this thread was posted ages ago but I just wanted to say that if anyone is searching for answers on why their cat is drinking a lot of water (which I did when I got a new cat), I wouldn't panic too much. My cat was new, and she's about 10 and I noticed she was drinking for around 5 minutes non-stop, at least 2-3 times a day, she's a bit on the skinny side and much prefers wet food to dry food. I searched what this could mean and I got really scared it could be diabetes or kidney disease. We took her to the vets who said she's fine, but to watch out for the amount of salt in her cat food, we changed her food (from Gourmet to Felix) and she stopped drinking such a large amount straight away.

I just wanted to post this in case you're worried about taking your cat to the vets, I know its unsettling for them.
