Why do you want to stop a puppy doing what is the most natural (and necessary) thing in the world. They have to chew to exercise their jaws to loosen their puppy teeth, and also to learn how hard they can bite when playing.

Give it plenty of things to chew such as bones, pigs ears, rope toys, even old socks knotted together. If it tries to chew something it should not, then give it one of its own chew things.

Don't worry - this phase will only last a few months!
Forgot to say, if you go out leave it in a cage with some chews so it has something to occupy it and can't chew anything it shouldn't.

Thanks I did mean to say things I don't want him to chew like underwear, table, chairs, door frames. He does have his own things but I will try and give him some more toys of his own. Hopefully my home will survive until this phase passes.
If he doesn't have a cage, get him a puppy pen or fence off part of the kitchen so he has his own area. Then you can give him things to chew and he won't be able to get hold of your stuff or eat the furniture and fittings.
There is a spray you can get that deters puppies etc from chewing. We had to use it when our pup got a taste for the sideboards and began destroying them. It's a bit like that nailvarnish that stops you biting your nails, but for dogs. And it works! Can't remember the name, but if you've a Pets@Home near you, they definately stock several varieties of it.
My last dog was a chewer and many shoes and paper things got chewed up, but I did get her a nylabone . It was vanilla flavoured, smelled nice, made her breath smell nice, and she loved it. Don't know if they still sell them though but there are plenty of things like it. Those' rawhide ' things made her ill though so be careful.
Hope he grows out of it, most calm down when they grow up.
Bitter Bite is what you want to deter him from chewing up your stuff ..but make sure he has plenty doggy things to amuse him.The best thing I ever had for my dog was a ball that made squeaky noises as it rolled around and you could put bits of biccy and stuff in it .It's long gone now but kept him amused for hours thus leaving my shoes, rugs and things alone !
Hi,just be carefull with the Nylabone chewing bones,we gave our GSD pups these and allthough they loved them as they come in different flavours.....they are so hard that they CAN damage their teeth.Unfortunatly we found out too late (from our vet) .Another good toy is the kong, the black one is the strongest and they too come in sizes from small to xlarge. You can stuff these with food, cheese, bonioes and IF you pack it GOOD then your pup will have hrs of fun trying to retreive all of it.Regards.
You can now buy some squirty stuff to put in kongs, but you can also use peanut butter and stuff it with bits of biscuit or dry food.

If you buy one of those balls that have treats stuffed in them, make sure the hole where you put the stuff is small otherwise your dog can get its jaw caught in the gap.

I never found the spray works and unless you spray every surface, wire, article of clothing, shoe, etc. they will find something. Better to confine them and give them stuff they can chew without causing a problem.
