For the past 3 weeks or so we are currently having problems with hornets in the back garden. What started out as the odd hornet is gradually getting worse. Last night we had 2 in the bathroom which we managed to kill. Tonight on returning home after a day out and turning on the outside lights, before we knew it there were 11 which we manged to kill. I then went up and ran a bath and another one had come in the window which we killed. We have searched everywhere in the garden to see if we can find a nest but to no avail. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

It is highly likely that you have a hornets nest in your roof void, you can usually spot the hornets access to the loft just by walking very slowly around the house keeping any eye around the gutter/fascia area, that is where they usually go in. I suggest you do not go into the loft looking for them, whilst they are docile they will be attracted by a torch light as they are attracted to the lights in your house.
An alternative is to ensure you keep your windows closed in the evenings when they are so attracted to the light and tolerate them.

They are just trying to survive the same as the rest of us, but if they are a danger they must go!

They have no legal protection, so don't worry about that.
I had exactly the same problem for about 6 months, loads of wasps would fly into our bedroom first thing in the morning so i knew there was a nest somewhere but couldn't find it.
It wasn't until my mum was attacked one day that we found that it was in a bush.
All i did was get the hose pipe, spay the nest until a hole appeared, and then squirted a load of wasp powder in the hole. Since then not a wasp in sight.
