i have just been stung by some flying insect. i thought it was a wasp or bee but the stinger that was left in me did not look like either. does anyone know a good website with pictures so i can identify what it was? i found a few and it looked like a type of sawfly but these apparently do not sting.

It may be a hornet, because it kinda looks like a wasp, but im not sure if they sting or not.
if it was a Hornet, you'd know, a bit like giant wasps, they do sting, but to your relief, like Wasps, they do not leave their sting behind.
Yes Hornets do sting, but they are known as the gentle giants, whilst wasps will sting for the hell of it, Hornets seldom sting, In my work as a pest controler I have had many stings from wasps and bees but never from a hornet, I think your sting is probably a bee sting.
my little brother ot stung on the lip by hornet when we were kids, oh how I laughed.
do a search for kendall bioresearch - they have a bug identification gallery
If the stinger was left in you, it was a bee.
