I have been creosoting my sheds and want to do my chicken ark as well (it's 3 years old so needs a thorough and treatment). I have a temporary ark to put them in till the smell has worn off.

Will it harm them, or taint the eggs, how long should I leave it, is there something else I should use instead?

If you are in the UK then I think that creasote was made illegal about 3 years ago as it is a carcenagen so your answer is there I wouldn't use it as it could cause harm

I googled its been illegal since 30 June 2003

I'm using "creosote substitute"

I can't answer your question then if your useing a substitute as you havn't said what you are useing have you tried googleing the brand name to see if you can get any info that way?

I'm now using Creosote substitute (dichlorfluanid !). I tried the google, sounds like they dont know of any harm. (smells foul though)
It sounds like its a fungicide as well as a preserver and it causes minor skin and eye irritation, if ingested its passed in the urine. tests have shown no adverse effects on reproduction have been observed but foetal birth weights were reduced hope that helps :-) sounds like its not all that bad in comparison to other wood preserevers so I wouldn't worry to much.

Thanks. Obviously not as bad as old creosote or they wouldn't ban one & allow the other. The seem to have tested it on fish but not chickens
