I am moving house this weekend and my cats can't come with me. They are being 'fostered' by a family I know just down the road. I'm not worried about them being with the family as I know they will get looked after really well (or wouldn't have done it) But am worried about them settling in. They are 3 1/2 year old neutered males. They will stay in for a few days. They have been fine both times I've moved with them, but this is the first time they won't be with me. They are also very responsive to my voice. Will they be ok? Should I be there the first time they are let out? or should I stay away so they can bond with the family? I'm sure they are going to be far happier with the situation than I am, but I feel bad enough not having them with me, without anything happening to them as a result. tia x

Even though I can't imagine leaving my cats behind, I think staying out of their lives immediately would be the best for them.

I have taken in two male cats myself and none of them had a problem adjusting. Usually after a move I try keeping them inside for at least a week, so they get used to everything, but my last (and current) tomcat was crying so much that I ended up opening the door for him after only two days.

And he was fine, finding his way out and back.

They are quite smart, about things like that...

Thank you Bohne

The family came round last night to meet the boys and the mum said similar. I will see them as babysit for the family quite a lot.

It's going to be much harder for me than it is the cats, but that's the situ, so I have to deal with it. hopefully will change soon.

Thanks for replying anyway, was beginning to feel invisible!!

I'm so sorry you're having to give up your cats, but if they're remaining together in a secure environment where they are fed and looked after I'm sure they'll be fine. It must be difficult for you giving them up and I hope you'll have the chance to see them from time to time and that your house move goes OK.

Although it's not quite the same I had similar feelings when I had to find homes for kittens that I had looked after since their birth (their mum had been thrown out when she became pregnant!) Now, six years later, if I go to see them they remember me and still fuss round me. I'm sure your boys will be fine especially as they will still be together and will find this process much less difficult than you will!!

Best of luck!!
