OK, could someone try to explain this to me....

My boyfriend has a fish bowl (with a very small air filter) that sits about 5 ft. from the floor on a bookshelf. The tank held two tiny male guppies. Because the bowl was always very dirty, he brought home a small sucker fish (maybe 1" long) and added it to the bowl to keep the place clean.

After the first night, to my suprise I found the sucker fish lying in the floor dead the next morning! But, not only that, he was lying in the floor at least 3 ft. away from the bookshelf that held the bowl 5 ft. up! What in the world happened? How could he have gotten to the floor or even why?

the guppies do Kung Fu?

Fish jump out of the tank. I was cleaning mine the other week. Very carefully took the lid off, and one jumped right through my arm, down the back of the tank. Luckily I was able to net it and get it back in the tank. You need a lid.
Some sucker fish can stick to glass and can go out of the water for a short time. Not sure what shape your bowl is, but if smooth enough they can move along the sides above the water line. One evaded my housemate for half an our like that when he was trying to return it to the tank. It is also possible, like maggie says that it jumped out. Maybe you could reduce the level of the water in the tank, giving the fish less chance of jumping over the side.
Sounds like he blew off, instead of sucked off! Can I say that on answerbank?

well...all good theories, but how did the little guy get so far away? ...that would have been one hell of a jump for a little fish!

I think the guppies can kung-fu! :0)

Hi Drusilla, Yes of course you can say it but only if you put a disclaimer first, saying that this statement is of a non-sexually explicit nature.
I personally wouldn't put a sucker in a bowl, I assume its a Pleco, but whether a bowl or tank, the obvious answer is a lid. I've never heard of a lid for a bowl, so maybe a tank could be considered.
