National Park has been deliberately shot at with a bow and arrow and hours later when that hadn't killed him he was shot and killed by an American dentist. The killing itself is bad enough but the repercussions for Cecil's offspring are dire.

I find it strange that game rangers, guides, wild life film makers etc etc are frowned upon if they terminate a wild animals life, no matter how cruel and harsh the circumstances - that the way it is in the bush, let nature take it's course etc, etc. Yet a hunter can pay a shedload of money to kill for a trophy and interfere with the status quo in an area and, in this...

Hinters see no problem with killing animals and point out most of us eat meat. But this is different for a number of reasons.

First off the Lion isn't usually eaten. this is killing for the thrill of it. Then it was deliberately lured outside of the protected area. Then it wasn't killed humanely, outright, but spend hours presumably suffering. And then there is the fact that it was part of a science investigation which is now seriously affected.

Whoever was responsible (and I know he claims he thought it was a legitimate government approved hunt (which is a good reason not to allow it at all) and not a bribe on a "caper" he was in on; all those involved have a case to answer.

It puts humanity in a bad light to opt to kill for the thrill of it. It would be better if this was mainly a thing of the past. That culling was only done when it could be justified for whatever reason: and then done by professionals who would do it properly.

Good post OG @ 19.25.
Sickening to kill for the thrill
Shameful
It is disgusting. I don't think anyone can justify it.
Certainly would not let him anywhere near me with a drill in his hand
Thanks divebuddy - should have made myself clearer on my post about non intervention.
In his "apology" he states "I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite...". As someone else has said, you take aspirin: you kill or slaughter animals. I think that the usage of a euphemism is indicative of his killer mind-set.
And just to make it absolutely clear about the rangers/guide stance - if the injury or situation have been caused naturally then there is no intervention but if it is caused by humans 1.e. a snare or indeed Cecil then they will step in and end the suffering. Hope this clears up any misunderstanding.
According to the local news out there in MN, there is going to be a protest outside his office at 4pm their time. I think they're 7 or 8 hours behind your time.

You could be right, divebuddy: I guess it hasn't been proven yet that he has a history of killing animal just for the sport of it.
animals (plural), I meant to type.

From the majority of the responses on here, I imagine that most people would prefer Doctor to merely a stone-killer.
@stuey

I think the link in this post from ladybirder (originally on page 3) was the one with pictures of this turd grinning next to

this lion
leopard
ibex
elephant
rhino ( f'fs!!! )

This was no "one off".

He does appear to have, as you guys say, form, doesn't he?
