What is this green, hard-skinned insect that appears in one's house when one has opened the window? It is slightly bigger than a 50p coin in total, including its rather long legs.

marmaduke,  What part of the world are you in?

I would guess the UK. '50p coin' kinda gives it away. Any chance of a photo of this insect?

Was  your visitor a fluorescent lime green colour?

If so then it was an Oak Bush-cricket. Very weird looking creatures and totally unlike the usual grasshopper or cricket.

could it be a green shield bug?

It's dead now. It was very bright green, with long thin legs. Didn't move very much, and I didn't see it fly or walk to the other end of the ceiling before it died.
Sounds to me like a totally harmless cricket that just wanted to get back outside.

This is an Oak Bush Cricket marmaduke http://tinyurl.com/87jgk

We had one a couple of weeks ago on our ceiling - scary looking little beast plus it's nocturnal so keep your windows closed.

It looks similar definitely, though I don't think it had the yellow stripes. Maybe they come with age, but the poor little thing will never get to that stage now.
