That's what a lot of trees do to multiply. There'll be shoots come up and you'll have another lilac tree.

Funny that, leahbee. I got my lilac tree from next door. It came under the fence,!
Just to add to this: It's not very often you only see one lilac tree on it's own and it's not because the gardener wanted to plant a group together... They are really for the 'bigger' garden.
They send out suckers but aren't that difficult to get rid of.
I love the smell of Lilac trees.
