Dogs Fear of Lightning

Our dog wakes us up to tell us that the hydro is out. He also can see lightning, even if it isn't thundering, even in the middle of the night.  Why doesn't he keep his eyes shut and keep sleeping. He wakes us up to tell us this too. How do we deal with this as we need our sleep.

Perhaps since dogs have more sensitive hearing, your dog can hear thunder, even if you can't. PS 'the hydro is out'. What does that mean. Is it a reference to a hydroelectic dam or something?
