I've got mine about 10ft away from my other feeders, so they don't get bullied by the local sparrow squadron, seems to work for me.
close to fairly dense bushes so they can dart for cover and they feed better in a sunny spot
Mine are hanging from a large tree and they seem perfectly happy to muck in with all the other birds. What have you got in your feeders? I found they weren't at all interested in nyjer seed but they love sunflower hearts.
I have a feeding pole not quite in the middle of the garden and there are usually at least half a dozen goldfinches always buziing around it - they are quite bullish about who gets to the seeds first - it's them! Everyone else gets a turn after they've had their share! I've found that sunflower seed hearts go down really well, but they do like the nyjer seeds just as much (as does our resident wood pigeon, Chris, as my daughter named him) Recently, I've also had a pair of siskins and a bullfinch at the sunflower seeds.
Goldfinches (english) are keen on seeds that are still on the plant so have to learn to eat from a 'table'. If you want to attract goldfinches in particular, plant some ornamental thistle or/and cosmos flowers. When they set seed they will appear by the dozens.
I had my feeder in place for at least 2 weeks before a single finch visited ... the RSPB confirm that it takes a while for the birds to familirise themselves with a new feeder's location. Now, some months later, I've had to add a further two feeders to the site because of the large numbers of goldfinch and greenfinch that visit!
