Why do seagulls all face the same way when standing in a field?

to see all sorts of birds and others doing the same!

Not only seagulls but most flocks of birds, particularly plovers do this. They all face the wind direction so it doesn't ruffle their feathers - the wind just bounces off them. Taking to the air will always be windwards as this accelerates lift-off!

In conditions of calm they will face in any direction.

I think they must be waiting for a bus!
