Hi Clanad, while you`re here. I`ve got a clear day off in Boston next week (unusual for me). I`m undecided between whale watching or going to Salem on the train (could be fun as it`s almost Haloween). Have you done either? What do you think?

Done both... whale watching is a hit and miss proposition... sometimes you end up with a nice boat ride, but the price is worth it (.http://www.bostonharborcruises.com/boston-w
hale-watch/default.aspx?gclid=COags820_6sCFZA

). Salem is Ok, but kinda cheesy unless you're realy into hauntings and that sort of thing (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g6095
4-Activities-Salem_Massachusetts.html
).

I'd highly recommend doing the "Freedom Trail"... (http://www.cityofboston.gov/freedomtrail/ ) starts at Fanueil Hall in the middle of Boston and takes you (walking) to several historical and lovely highlights... such as the Old North Church ("One if by sea... etc.") The "trail" is a double row of red bricks set in the sidewalk... can't get lost.
When you get back to Fanueil Hall there's always lots going on and a true smorgasbord of places to eat. (If you like Italian, catch one of the small "Mom and Pop" hole-in-the-wall places... always excellent!) (Catch up on Fanueil Hall here: http://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com/ )

Have a great time! (Be sure to have a bowl of "Lobstah Chowdah"... especially if the weather is typically cold...)
I was in Boston in March and agree with Clanad, do the Freedom Trail and end up at SS Constitution, it's a great day out with lots of food stops on way. We started at Boston Common and had corn chowder for lunch at Quincy market. If u hav an evening spare I highly recommend Oleana in Cambridge for an evening meal.
Just to add , we went to Salem which we enjoyed but the train times to get back were crap.

Thanks for the info Clanad and rockyracoon. I had heard Salem is a bit false so I might give that a miss. The boat company guarantees you see a whale but I don`t know how they can do that (maybe they`ve got a plastic one they use when there`s a shortage) :-) I may well do the trail. I`d also like to go to the Museum of Fine Arts so I`ll see how much time I have. I won`t be doing any grand dinners because we don`t do that on trips (we`re all too tight) and I have to get up at the crack of dawn the next day.
