Hi i got a lil hamster yesterday, got one of the cages that have a tube running around the outside of the cage. Since i got him yesterday he has been sleeping in the tube and not in his house. Is this ok? just checking he will be ok in there? thanks xx

Yes it is fine, you will find they do their own thing when it comes to sleeping quarters, mine use to sleep in her tube and use her house for the toilet [at least it was in one spot] he/she will be happy if you don't move things around.Good luck with your new little pet.Mine passed away a year ago.
It's a bit like you choosing to sleep on the settee instead of in bed; doesn't hurt you but might be inconvenient for others.
Mine used to sleep in it's wheel and then wonder why it was difficult to go round in it. they are mad wee things and even if you do move its bedding around, it will just move it back to where it likes it. Mine also used to use it's bedroom as a toilet and poo store.

thanks for replies.

Only other thing im worried about is he really jumpy, ive had hamsters before but not this skitish. As soon as i walk near the cage he shoots up into the tubes and wont come out while im near! poor thing

What am i best doing? xx
Let him get used to you. You only got him the other day, the poor thing is still nervous.

I found talking to mine through his cage and offering him treats (bits of biscuits, grapes, carrot tops- infact almost anything) from your hand.

He'll eventually associate you with food- mine now comes out for a nosy and hoping for food whenever I go near him.
I work at PAH and we always recommend you leave the hamster to settle for two days so it will get use to its new home, If he is skitish he will retreat to his safe place and then spend most of his time in there.
So many customers come into the shop with the same problem. I would leave him for a while. You could tempt it with some nice treats but dont try to handle it yet let the little fellow smell your hand so he knows that you mean him no harm them after a while let him climb on you hand dont rush it. A lot of peole think you can just start to play with them as soon as you get them home. Im sure there is an exception to the rule you do occasionaly get really friendly ones not many though. good luck
