Can a dog make a distinction between when its raining and having a shower? I am just wondering because I was showering my puppy the other day and it had EXACTLY the same expression on its face as it did when I took it for a walk in the rain.

Funny! My dog hates going out in the garden when it rains, I think a lot of dogs are like that, he runs off too when he hears the bath running, I tend to use a plastic tub and gently pour the water over him at bath times, it's a little less threatening.
my puppy is not afraid of taking shower, but she is drinking the shower water, so i have to hold her head by one hand all the time when im washing her!!
My labrador used to jump into any pool, puddle , just think they know its not in thier control i had murders trying to get her clean. in the end had to resort to poodle parlour mud what ever but if i got the hose out or put her under the shower she would freak out.... so mine knew the differance
