dog bathing ??

Our dog loves being bathed and shampoo'ed, although someone has said it should not be done on a regular basis ,

He is a Cavalier and goes in the woods and over the fields everyday getting mucked up , his coat is lovely soft and shiny and very curly when left to go long ,

Has anyone got a perspective on this ?? and what precautions should we be taking ?? if any ?

you shouldnt bathe him too much as he will lose his natural oils, i have a springer and he gets filthy, i just wash him off with warm water, no shampoo and give him a good brush, the only time he gets a shampoo is when he gets clipped about 4 times a year.i

You should only limit the amount of times you bath your dog if they have that very short satin kinda coat. Breeds such as rotweilers, bull terriers, short haired labs and so on. This is because these types of coats desperately need the oils in the skin to create a sheen and protection over the hair. Long haired dogs like our cocker spaniel for instance, can be washed as often as they get dirty. Which is alot LOL!!!!!

No dog should be bathed too often because it dries the skin and can cause itching and irritation and removes the natural oils. A good rub down with a towel and the mud etc should soon brush off.

I show my dogs and they only get bathed about twice a year unless they roll in something obnoxious.

Thak you for your reply's, I reckon we must have the dog mixed up with our son as he only baths about twice a year ........
