Can anyone suggest a behavioural strategy that a dog may employ to control overcooling??//

It shivers to warm up its muscles, the same as we do.

When resting, it curls up to minimise its body area exposed to the colder air and covers its nose with the tail thereby prewarming the air it inhales - the space between the skin and the hair is an insulated air layer.
