I have a 13 week old King Charles Cavalier puppy, the breeder was feeding the pups on Eukanuba dried puppy food and asda own puppy food. We have carried this on but the pup is absolutely scatty!! She is totally mad and my partner is convinced its the Eukanuba making her hyperactive! Does anyone know if this could be true? I havent given her any today and she does seem a bit calmer but I dont know if thats just a fluke.

Eukanuba is a grade 3 commercial dog food and mixed with asdas own puppy food.................you are asking for trouble,

I would look for a low protein food, ie JWB, Arden Granges, not supermarket shop rubbish

and also ekanuba is the same company as iams,

IAMS test on animals. see http://www.uncaged.co.uk/iams.htm

http://www.iamscruelty.com/
What treats etc are you feeding?

Some cheap commercial treats have colourants etc in that dogs may react to (bit like kids on orange juice etc).

I tend to follow what the breeder recommends - they are usually very experienced and know their breed better than anyone (presuming they are responsible breeders and have been breeding for a number of years). I would also look at the Asda own brand rather than blame the Eukanuba.
Puppies need a high protein food. Eukanuba is one of the best there is. I have fed it for over 18 years and raised all my puppies on it. I sell all sorts of dog food, so know whats in them all and this is the only one I ever feed my own on. Speak to the breeder and tell them your concerns, I am sure they will be able to reassure you that this is just puppy behaviour. Make sure the puppy has somewhere it can go to 'chill out' such as a cage or puppy pen, and if she won't settle down put her in there for a while so she cannot keep on playing and running round all the time. Give her a bone or pigs ear to chew on and toys.

And yet again we get the same old rubbish about Iams being dragged out - this was discredited when it was first put out years ago -- this was put out by PETA who despite claiming to be animal lovers regularly put down thousands of animals in America. Google 'PETA kills animals' and you will see for yourself.
I aggree with Lankeela about the food, I've got a friend who has a 4 month old Dalmation puppy which is quite hyper which most puppies are at that age and everybody is telling her to put the pup on a low protien diet, puppies need high protien food for good growth, I wish people would read up on these things before giving that sort of advice !
Actually James Wellbeloved Puppy Food is 30% protein, and Eukanuba Puppy/Junior is only 27.6%!
Arden Grange Weaning/Puppy Food is even higher at 32% and their Puppy/Junior is 29%.
Most dog owners don't even consider the protein or fat levels in the dog food, they buy the 'cheapest' but then spend most of their time shovelling up most of it when the dog cannot digest it, so all that is wasted money, as the dog gets no goodness from it.

Also tinned food is mostly water, so they are again wasting money when they could buy a good quality food which is utilised better and save money in the long run.

And just in case you missed it, the link to PETA KILLS ANIMALS is

So much for being an animal welfare organisation!
*ok I hang my head in shame*

James Beloved eeekkkk now that slap across the face hurt :)

30% puppy
24% Junior/Performance
20% in Adult

I do agree that James Wellbeloved is a good food, particularly for dogs with allergies.

Sorry about the slap!

Hi thanks for all your answers!
Im now so confused - do I get my puppy a high protein puppy food or a low protein puppy food???
High!
High, because you won't find a good quality puppy food that is low in protein.
Why not try real food Louise? A Cav is not particularly big and won't eat you out of house and home. We have 26 dogs (yes we are mad) and all our dogs are fed raw meat. We use Vitalin Crown as a biscuit mixer for the big dogs (we have Canaan Dogs -16- and 8 Paps). Obviously we have to buy in bulk and we've just had a delivery of meat and we counted the capacity of our freezer - 450lbs! This will last just over a month! And before people start to talk about balanced diet, we also add pulped veg, eggs, pasta and rice occaisionally and crushed eggshell for calcium. Dry commercial foods are just for convenience.
