Herd Or Flock Of Goats?

We went to the "Welsh Government Office" yesterday to register our herd of "1" goat and to get a holding number so we can actually receive our new pygmy goat on to our land. The guy responsible for such affairs insists that it is a "flock" of goats and not a herd and all the paperwork refers to a flock of goats.

Maybe its a Welsh thing?

I'd use herd but both are acceptable according to wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_collective_nouns

Looks like flock and herd are both acceptable when it comes to goats!
Herd
Flock is sheep
IMO

otherwise you wouldn't have a goat-herder.
You have to register Goats in Wales?
Yes -its a flock for the purposes of Defra . You get a 'Flock' number to put on your ear tags ( if you are breeding any baby goats) and a Holding number for you.
Or drove, or trip.

OILhead, thanks for the link, but really, a flock of goats!?

I replied, I also have a heard of chickens to register?

He didnt appear amused!

I also need to register my "drift" or "drove" of one kune kune pig.

So it is still going to take another week before we can get the animals home to the farm Grrrr.

ClaryS, we aren't breeding from the goat but we still need to register and ear tag the goat.
ratter, why does it not have an eartag? Your new pygmy goat would not be able to leave the original holding without one and its up to the original owner to provide this, not the person buying the animal. All goats and sheep must have at least one ear tag showing the flock number it was born into ( sometimes called a slaughter tag) before the age of 6 months or two ear tags (flock number and animal number) if you are going to breed from them. I do 'The Books' for a few local farmers and believe me you have no idea how much paperwork is involved.

Does that mean tony is now a Goat-Flocker?
Where's Tony when you want him.
If you want to know everything about Goat ear-tags in Wales, go to UGov site and apply to change the address on your Driving Licence.
If a flock of birds roost in trees . Then this must be a flock of Goats

First I've herd of them being called a flock. Maybe it's an EU ruling ? Not that the UK authorities have any more sense.
I always thought it was a flock of sheep and a herd of goats but then a shepherd was originally a sheep herd, so maybe it should be a herd of sheep?
what is your flock of one goat going to be called ? hi cara.
Lonely ?

Woofgang, I think it is a flock of sheep, but the title shepherd is used because saying " I am a sheep flocker" can all too easily be misunderstood
Question Author
Anne, Our flock of 1 goat is called Daisy May, she is the runt of the litter and white. Cara says Hi!

ClaryS, the goat will be ear-tagged before it leaves the farm to come to us, it just hasn't been done yet.
