We have a couple of white cloud mountain minnows which were transferred from a cold water starter fish tank to a Fluval Chi tank. Now as you probably know the Fluval Chi tank does not have a lid.

One of the minnows decided to jump out at 8.00 am this morning. My daughter shouted that she saw it happen but because I was asleep at the time I couldn't be bothered to get out of bed. After at least 15 minutes, daughter shouted for me to move the fish as it was upsetting her.

I grabbed a tissue and picked up the fish which then started to twitch. Shocked, I put it back in the tank and all is well. I'm just a bit astonished that the fish survived and looks just as healthy as the other one.

I still can't work out how it survived, does anyone have an explanation?

I've know this happen, goldfish jump out of the bowl. I've no idea why.

why didn't your daughter pick it up and put it back? - it could have died in 15 minutes!
I can't believe you couldn't be bothered to get out of bed to put it back in its tank.

She's only 6 years old. I felt a bit bad at leaving it so long but I was convinced it would be dead. It was tucked up under the table and down the side of the sofa so we had to pull everything out first. lol

Your 6 year old was on her own and you couldn't be bothered to get out of bed to put the fish back in it's bowl?
Awww, the poor thing. Don't have any explanation, just want to say I'm glad it survived.
agreed.. your daughter would have been upset

She wasn't on her own her Dad was with her. In fact I don't know why I bothered asking the question at all due to some of the responses!!
It could be that the one that you 'saved' was the second one that jumped out.

It is unfortunate that the (first?) fish couldn't be gotten to quicker. Yes, fish feel pain too.

Wildwood - no fish has died as we rescued the one that jumped out by putting it back in the tank. My question was, how could it survive out of water for 10+ minutes?
It is best to get one with a lid. I was shocked the first time one of my fish jumped out while I was cleaning the tank.
