I'll have to record it sqad, got to go out for a pub meal, sons gf's birthday !.
tony...about 14 years ago took a minibus load of Dr's and theatre staff to Lincolnshire and stayed at the Petwood Hotel, Woodhall Spa which as you know was in the war the Officer's Mess of 617 Squadron with all the memorabilia.

I made it clear that it was men only, but one prat brought his wife......there's always one eh?
Question Author
sqad, I hope he was punished accordingly !.
Question Author
thanks for the links tony, a truly impressive plane. I went to a town show a few years ago and they had the BBMF fly over, the Lancaster flew overhead with the bomb doors open, what a sight.
Question Author
Bet that was great baza, bomb doors open.
tony, good job I was wearing brown trousers.
Quite a sight Tony, I have seen that Lancaster a few times, it flew over East Fortune airfield (where the Museum of Flight is) a few years back, and I;ve also seen it with the Battle of Britain Mememorial Flight. Just the sound of those Merlin engines! Wonderful aeroplanes!
Question Author
I have also seen the memorial flight my self, a few years ago it flew very low over Santa Pod drag strip ( Santa Pod drag strip used to be an American air base during WW2).
Question Author
And yes nungate those Merlin engines sound terrific don't they.
love those Merlins!
Radio Lincolnshire (94.9)are doing wall to wall coverage today, there is a specially written play at 6.00pm and then they are on the radio all night, doing a minute by minute reconstruction.
I haven't seen any planes going over, they are going over RAF Scampton I think which is north of Lincoln.
Unfortunately I don't think you can receive R/Lincs on Freeview, but some of you (Most?) will be able to get round that I'm sure.
From the Colonies... it's always been said here, admiringly, about Lancaster pilots that they had to be real men to handle that many pieces of tail.

Applicable, as well, to our own Lockheed P-38 Lightning (seen here: http://www.warbirdsnews.com/warbird-news/p-38-lightning-f4u-corsair-video.html ) and the much later but huge for its day, Lockheed L-1049 Constellation, affectionately known as the Super Connie (seen here: http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Images/Vintage/Transports/Connie/BG583.jpg.html )
Clanad...as kids, we were always excited when we saw a P38 fly over....a "Lightning" as we called it.....couldn't miss it .....
Question Author
Clanad, what was the proper name for those Mustang fighters ?.
For anybody who's interested, in this part of Notts a memorial to pilots who died while stationed at Gamston, now Retford Airport is being dedicated at Milton Mausoleum. The dedication takes place at 11.00 on Sunday and following a short service there will be a fly past by the Lancaster, weather permitting. It's pretty easy to find head along the A1 to Markham Moor roundabout then take the back road to Walesby past the truck stop.
Tony, their equally called "P-51's" as well as Mustangs. If you had been a Messerschmitt pilot over Germany in WWII they would have been called "Sudden Death"...

The German's also called the P-38's "Forked Tail Devils"... ( Gabelschwanzteufel )
Question Author
Thanks Clanad.
