My puppy is 5 months old. She has been acting fine all day and was out earlier playing with a couple of other dogs she normally plays with. I've been with her the whole time she has been outside so don't think she's been stung and I haven't seen her bang in to anything.

I noticed this afternoon that the left side of her nose was a little swollen from just below her eye down to her nostril. It was so slight I thought I might be imagining it. It is now noticeably swollen, she is acting like normal but will not let me touch that side of her face. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort although I'm sure she must be a little bit!

Anyone know what might be causing the swelling and if a trip to the vets is required or just to wait it out??

TIA

Could she have been stung or bitten by an insect?
Question Author
Well its possible because she has been outside but she's not made any noise or indicated she has been stung.

Was just thinking - the park I take her to had freshly cut grass, is it possible she has sniffed some of it up and its stuck in her nose causing the swelling?
Has she inhaled a seed or something? If she has it could get infected, she needs to be seen by a vet.

Possible she's inhaled something daffy. Should I phone the emergency vet or take her down first thing in the morning do you think?
There should be an emergency vet on call you can speak to tonight caj1 at your usual vets.
You could phone the emergency vet for advice, they may want to see her straight away but it may be something that can be left till morning, only they can say really.
I hope she gets sorted out and is better soon.

Thanks, will give them a call to see what they say and give you an update.

We're not having a good week so far, I've had vertigo and she has a swollen nose! :(

Phoned emergency vets who said she has probably been stung by something and had a reaction to it, he said as long as she could breathe through her nose to not come in. He said to give her 150mg of aspirin and if the swelling hadn't gone down by the morning to bring her in.

Thanks for your help :)
Oh good. At least that's set your mind at rest.
sorry for the question, but do you really give dogs aspirin?
That was news to me as well. One assumes the vet knows what he/she is talking about.

It is also safe to give a dog Piriton (but not other brands of antihistamine). If it is a bite, piriton could well help. I give it for nettle stings 'cos my dog is a whimp!

But take the advice of your vet and give the low dose aspirin.
interesting re the aspirin.... thanks

Now you lot have me worrying about aspirin! I assumed the vet knew what he was talking about and I double checked with him the amount to give her. I only saw your posts after I had given it to her!! :-s
Question Author
Oh take no notice of me, just wittering. You've done the right thing following the vet's advice.
Question Author
She seems ok so far anyway, she's back napping at the end of the sofa after knocking my cup of tea over with her waggy tail :)
Question Author
Off to the vets this morning, her nose is just as swollen!!
didn't post last night but followed the thread - hope pup gets on okay -
Sounds like she has been bitten by something, and I would have thought the the vet would have suggested Piriton?
