Asda seem to be following the lead taken by others (including B&Q and the Halifax Bank) by using real staff instead of celebrities or actors:

You only need an Equity card in order to act (in certain professional capacities). A real worker is, by definition, not acting - so Equity rules are irrelevant.
As Eash indicates, HBOS (Halifax) seem to have ended their run of ads using employees. Perhaps it's because some of those employees ended up being minor celebrities anyway?

They are staff as far as I know, they filmed an ad at my local Asda recently. Which was fairly amusing as they shut down half the store at about 5.30pm so you couldnt actually buy what you wanted to get lol.
Sorry Buenchico, but you dont need an equity card to act, anyone can act, equity is the actors union, saying you need an equity card to act is like saying you have to join the RMT to work for the railways or the NUM to work at a pit, equity is a choice not an obligation, a good choice in most cases but still only a choice.
In the new Isa Isa Baby halifax advert they are actors, the girl is Fliss Walton ( she's been in Casualty) and the guy is Finlay Robertson ( he's been in Dr Who) i think.
it possibly depends on whats required in the ads...if an untrained person could pull it off...
re the one in dr who...perhaps the experince just gave him the acting bug? or that he happened to be a part time actor anyway who worked there in between roles and offered his services...?
