Can somebody explain to me how this works please.

You send an old mobile to these people and they send you a cheque.

So how do they make their money?
(I'm assuming they don't recondition the mobiles and re-sell - or do they?).

That's exactly what they do. Not everyone must have the latest eye popping multi function device. Some people are willing to pay a lot less for a phone that allows them to just talk or text.
They either get sold in less developed countries or broken down and recycled (there's gold in phones for a start!)
They give you a pathetic amount of money for your phone, you'd be better off selling it on eBay.

Then they either recondition them and sell
or?

Then they either recondition them and sell them in less developed countries or stripped down to the basic materials (gold etc)
All of the phone recyclers will dispose of your old handset according to the EU WEEE directives - i.e. no part of your old handset is sent to landfill. This is true even if your phone is broken or has no value at all.
As stated earlier, if you're looking to sell, you could probably get more money for your phone on eBay but if it's an older model or broken, you could still get money for some models. Best bet is to use a comparison site such as http://www.mobiles2money.co.uk to see what you could get - you'll be surprised at how much the offers vary between recycling companies!
