In a non anti-gay way I am not 100% sure what that opening scene was meant to be. It's the first time I have watched an episode of this series cos of normally working on a saturday, have I missed something?

I think you must have watched an alternate dimension version of the programme.
Perhaps you are referring to Prince John asking Gisburne if he loved him.This was Prince John's paranoia as regent wanting his subjects to love him as much as they loved his brother Richard The Lionheart.
I would refer you to The Lion ln Winter but I don't think you'd like the relationship between Richard and Philip.

I saw The Lion In Winter when it was released and know what you mean, but we are talking MR Vicar of Dibley and he is still fair game as far as I know, now Mel has decided to reveal his bit on the side, and so my motives are pure here.
