You don't need a visa to enter Switzerland if you have a British Passsport.
As Rollo indicates, any citizen of any EEA country can travel freely to any other EEA country. (EEA = EU + Switzerland, Norway & Iceland).

I'm not sure that you can leave the airport if your luggage is checked through. If it isn't checked through then you will need to take your luggage with you into the city, then be back in time in order to check in for your flight. To be honest it isn't usually worth it to try and visit a city in such a period of time.
You CAN leave the airport if you have checked baggage as long as you meet immigration requirements.

Just be sure you arrive back in time to go through security again. Theree's a fast and frequent train service between the airport and city in Zurich but even so I doubt if you have time to spend more than 1 hour max in the city. Not really worth it
