It was Helen Terry, who was also a member of The Thunderthighs who were 'the coloured girls' going "Doo-do-do-do-do-do-doo" on Lou Reed's 'Walk On The Wild Side'.

Virgin Records tried to launch her as a solo artist, but as they discovered - years before Michelle Mcmanus or Rick Waller, the world does not like overweight pop stars.
Helen Terry was born in 1956 - Walk on the wild side 1972

She never sang until Boy George met her in a club.
