I am considering changing my 15 years old volvo 740 for a volvo S40 1.8,however, I have been told that the 1.8 is underpowered - has anyone any experience of this please. thanks

They are not underpowered as such. The sluggishness is hugely down to the 'power to weight' ratio as these cars are extremely heavy.
