I want to buy a sound progma that allows me to edit sound files eg to get rid of hiss, cut and paste and add effects - any suggestions??

Goldwave, (Goldwave inc.). Cool Edit Pro (www.syntrillium.com) and Wavelab (www.steinberg.com) are all good at this sort of thing. If you're looking for cheap I'd go for Goldwave, if you're looking for professional I'd go for Wavelab. Have fun!
