Which Briton has won the most Oscars? I suspect it may be John Williams for various scores.

Question Author

Someone told me that John Williams was born in Newcastle - clearly wrong, so it can't be him. The question still stands though.

John Williams was born in NewYork.
John Barry however was born in York and he has won 4 Oscars.
Beat that!
I can beat that Gary.

cademy Award's (Oscar's):

John Barry has to this date won 5 Academy Award's (Oscar's):

BORN FREE from 1966.
(2 awards: Best Score & Best Song.)
THE LION IN WINTER from 1968
OUT OF AFRICA from 1985 and
DANCES WITH WOLVES from 1990

He has been nominated for 2 Academy Awards for:
MARY. QUEEN OF SCOTS from 1971 and
CHAPLIN from 1992.
That'll teach me for being so cocky eh?
5 is even better though isnt it?
No one comes near him.
David Lean and Michael Caine have 2 and thats as near as anyone gets.
I believe Nick Park has won at least 3 and still going strong....also someone in either costume or make-up jogs my memory, but hasnt registered yet...
I got my facts from here - i had a feeling the costume designer Edith Head (who won 8) was british but she wasnt.

Rick Baker who I believe has won 9 awards for make-up, was born in Birmingham.

Birmingham, New York State, but its close enough for me !...
