On the Beeb's logo, little characters are going around a helter-skelter. Each successive rows are going around in opposite directions. How is it the characters don't bump into one another around the back out of view and fall off?

Because its not real. The apparatus is not really that high, the same way as the teams on university challenge are not really one on top of the other. Its put togther by clever tech people in a studio.
also you can see that it isnt a spiral and the gradient in the bits you can see aren't steep enough to make the spiral up
