Saw an advert extolling the virtues of a Bosch dishwasher which claimed their machine used something like 6 litres of water per wash - I guess that is possible - whereas a 'normal' hand/sink wash uses 49 litres!!!

Are they sure? 49 litres? (That's over 10 & a half gallons in old money)

On a completely different advert Mr Johnny Ball - the guy who would have us believe taught us all maths - asks would you prefer £15 a month for a service agreement on an old boiler or £17 a month for a brand new one including servicing. OK you might say sounds reasonable? What he doesn't mention - or use in his calculations - and is in VERY SMALL PRINT is the £560 plus deposit!!

Finally a lot of these adverts - especially skincare/make-up adverts say that '79% agree it makes you look younger' - and how many of the millions of possible target audience have they asked? Generally between one and two hundred - which means 0.000000079% really.

Come on ad people - give us the true facts

My bugbear at the moment is the PPI claim services that say something along the lines of

"You could be owed up to £3000... or more"

If it's "or more" then why use the (contradictory) limiter "up to"?
If it's "or more" where did they pluck the random £3000 from?
the amount of washing up you can get into a normal size dishwasher is about 3 bowls of washing up
Include water run from the tap to ensure washing water is hot and/or for rinsing then I can quite believe you can use 49 litres to hand wash

agree with Ojread. It's the rinsing that uses all the water in a basin wash.
<79% agree it makes you look younger'>

if 79 of a sample of 100 said so that's a perfectly valid percentage to use - the issue is one of sample size. You don't need a sample of millions to get an accurate measure for the entire target audience; certainty levels will hit 95% at a sample size of around 800.

However, it is true that a sample of 100-200 is of questionable statistical validity and shouldn't be given house-room by any responsible researchers.
I'm surprised the MRS don't jump on it.
That annoys me as well, Zeuhl
One that gets to me, //Buy one get one free//, billhooks, what they're saying is, normally we charge you double the price we need to, it ups our profits!
