I'm Confused...... L G B T Q +.....

Ok I know what LGBT is and I noticed lately that a Q+ has been added in various media sources. Ever keen to keep up with modern terms I googled it. I was horrified to discover that the Q means Queer. Surely that's a word that has been considered wrong? So what's occurin? So is "Queer" now de rigueur?

I expect it's one of those nonsense things where a group tries to convince others that a word is THEIR word so it's ok for them, but not ok from you. That stated I'm sure many folk really don't get het up about who says what, anyway.

It's a word that's fine when used by gay people about themselves...but not when used by non-gays.
(Rather like the "n" word that black people often use about themselves/each other).

I was confused too when I first heard it, but as it was a 'queer' man who said it I thought it was ok. Not so long ago we'd have been in trouble saying it and I still hate the word.

The community claimed it and have been using it for years, no longer an insulting you take ownership. It's like the women who use the 'd' word for some of their number. However it's mostly seen that terms once used in a universally derogatory fashion are only acceptable when used within the community and most are still considered insulting when used by those outside it.
