Why has the swear filter been changed and why are some words now permitted?

I (think) I can get bloody pissed off but can no longer say ***, ***, sod or any other mild swear word.

I quite enjoyed the alternatives to common swear words and found them more meaningful that a few asterisks.

This is a genuine question to satisfy my curiosity.

"Ed, is that an appropriate link.....?"

I put a NSFW tag on it... And it is the word that your title disguises
I'm glad Ed's post was removed (no doubt by Ed), it's not right to promote words, dictionary or not, that a) we can't say on here, and b) most of us wouldn't want to.
NSF my living room either, Ed :-(

Well shows how mild my language is as I had thought Lady Garden was what was in your link!
I have to bow to the preferences of the moderators :)
Really? - someone reported you?!
one of the previous Eds, that nice American lady I think, once startled several ABers by talking about Grope**** Lane, the red light district in old London. As she was the Ed the word didnt get asterisked out (but I'm not even going to try it).

I rather miss the swear filter too, it was witty.
My favourite alternative to What The Funicular is dafuq.

Just saying........
I liked salad chefs.
If swear words are expletives, and they are, they are said in the heat of the moment. I see no reason why anyone should use swear words when they are composing a carefully considered answer to a post. To my mind, it's just attention seeking.
Exactly, ***** ******s!

Tilly, I think in part it's about shifting boundaries. When I was young, the public press wouldn't go further than darn and heck; harsher words were considered expletives. Now those ones aren't and increasingly it doesn't seem that even the F word isn't among younger people. So it's hard to say what should be allowed and what not.
I liked the Salad Chefs too, and will miss them using sugar and broccoli when cooking up a meal for the barstewards.
I'm not saying people shouldn't be allowed, jno. I am saying people don't need to use expletives in their writing.
yes, Tilly, but I'm saying if more and more people do use them, they cease to be expletives. And it can be hard to tell at any given moment where a word is on the path from rude to respectable.
I know what Tilly means, in speech and maybe with people you know then certain words escape and all is well - on a site where you are not sure how those words may be construed by everyone it should (and does in my case) temper what you write.
