I have googled this but have not come up with a satisfactory answer. What is the difference between a nursing home and a care home? Does anyone have any experience of moving a relative from a care home to a nursing home.

I know nursing homes have nurses on hand but is the level of care better. I am in such a quandary as to what my Dad's best interests are.

Goodnight Tilly, sleep well.
annieigma, //My mother is in a care home, if she sneezes they call an ambulance!! No one qualified in anything, just an old peoples hotel really.// I am tempted to say that is nonsense!

Care Homes do not run without qualified people, I work in a care home and we all have many qualifications and it is a requirement that all staff have ongoing training in many aspects of care, most of these qualifications will not be obvious to anybody observing, in the last 9 yeas I have done about forty courses, some take a day or two, some take up to a year to complete. Nearly all staff will be qualified in First Aid. A crucial part of that First Aid is knowing that we are not Paramedics! We are usually working under strict guidelines of when a District Nurse, a GP or an ambulance need to be called. Sometimes we call an ambulance because we are unsure, do we take that chance or do we cover ourselves against being sacked or prosecuted or a person dying because we made the wrong choice. Yes we err on the side of caution, we have to!
My mums been in and out of hospital, from the residential care home, more times than I care to remember, which of course can be very unsettling but when she is in hospital, her health and well-being improves a lot, due to the close monitoring plus the right kind of medication.

I find that finding the right kind of care can be a minefield. social workers can be helpful, but personally I'v had more progress, looking online to see whats available locally, then going to check them out myself.

Best wishes - Chip.
Chip, it sounds like the community services round you need to be given a poke it its collective ribs. She should be being supervised by her GP and by the community care services (Nursing Physio and so on) while in her res care and her meds should mostly be able to be managed without admission to hospital. Its part of the job that i used to to.
Chip, s Woofgang says, they should be able to manage her at the care home, If the care home are doing their job properly they they would normally manage these situations, if they are not coping then I would say that maybe she needs to be in a nursing home or maybe a hospital or the the Care at the Care Home needs looking at.
Woof & Ratter,

All what you have said is pretty much spot on! and thats why I intend to go for nursing care, as I stated earlier (22:18).
Nursing home is care provided by a registered nurse at minimal cost. Care is provided for individuals who require additional nursing care and support either within the comfort of there own home or in a care or nursing home.

Care homes are residential facilities that provide services with daily living activities. Care Homes provide more personal atmosphere than other types of long-term care services
chcdirect, "Nursing home is care provided by a registered nurse at minimal cost." Not 100% accurate. Nursing homes are staffed by the same staff as a Residential home with the same qualifications, the differences are that, in a residential home, meds. are administered by trained care staff, in a Nursing Home, there is a full time trained Nurse available, this nurse will also administer meds. In both cases the medication is prescribed by a GP.
The nurse will also tend to wounds and dressings etc, where as in a Residential Home, a Nurse will usually attend from the local GP practice for such things, often on a daily basis.
Home nursing is health care or supportive care that is provided in the home of the patient rather than at a doctor's practice or a hospital. Home health care can either be provided by a healthcare professional or by a friend or family member depending on the level of care that is required and the expertise that would be necessary in order to assist the patient in question.

Home nursing can be considered important to family members and the patient themselves for the following reasons:
• It allows the patient to continue to live at home while receiving care rather than being committed to a nursing home, which is often a traumatic experience for the patient and their family
• The familiarity of remaining at home and not being treated in a foreign setting, can be comforting to the patient and helps with the healthcare process
• If healthcare professionals assist in treating the patient, it provides some relief and respite for friends and family members who may have to spend a lot of time caring for and looking after the patient, which can be a stressful experience
• Regular visits from a nurse to the patient's home provide a continuum of care. This means that any changes in the patient's condition or circumstances can be quickly spotted and dealt with accordingly
• Appropriate medication can be easily delivered to the patient without the hassle of them trying to get it themselves

From the perspective of the medical profession and the wider public, home nursing can also be viewed as beneficial because it helps ease the problem of overcrowding and business at hospitals and doctor's practices.
