If you've any experience of this I'd appreciate your opinion.

My kitchen cupboards are over 20 years and in very good condition.  The extra high wall cupboards are no longer sold.

The doors are solid wood and need a facelift.  Is vinyl wrap a good idea?

You could look on BBC Iplayer and see in Blue Peter have done a programme covering kitchen doors with sticky-back plastic.

Seriously, there are firms who will replace doors/drawer fronts on existing cabinets; might that be a better option.

I've looked into replacing the doors and drawers but cannot find the extra large wall cupboard doors anywhere, they would have to be custom made

My gut feeling is, no. If you are used to the quality of solid wood then I suspect a sticky backed covering would stick out a mile. Can't you refurbish the existing doors with abrasive paper & varnish ?

I haven't got the time nor the inclination, OG.

Maybe getting a company to spray paint would be a better idea

I agree with OG. Apart from the look and feel I think the edges will start to lift and then it will look a real mess. That's why I suggested replacements.

Forget the vinyl wrapping, it'll only last a couple of weeks. There are lots of companies around that spray kitchen units.

If you can find a specialist, there are very good results from re-painting doors - we had ours all done.

They take them away, strip, clean and prep and then spray paint - looks better than new.

Our people are no good to you (unless you happen to live in Kerry 😎) - but I'm sure similar operations exist in the UK.

What colour did you go for, Dave?  New handles, too?

Agree with Melv. We've just had ours spray painted and it looks brilliant. Day 1 was a strip off of existing coating and new primer; day 2 new paint and all put back together. Only drawbacks are 1. the kitchen is totally out of bounds for 2 days (microwave meals done in the office took some logistics to work out) and 2 the length of time it took to completely empty the kitchen - and of course then put it all back.

"Oxford Stone" and dull aluminium knobs - they even did a cut&shut on an existing door to make a panel for the fitted dishwasher - I know it's been done, but I'm blowed if I can see the join!

It's only the doors and drawer fronts  that will need doing and a lot of companies take them away

We did our old ones years ago with Fablon Plus and they came out very good and the edges never came away.  Was a job putting it on but finish was very good and kitchen lasted for another 10 years before we had it replaced.  Cupboards were in good condition so it seemed a waste to change them just because we didn't like the finish on them.

By the way ours were the extra high wall cupboards too.

Have you tried ringing a company like Kitchen Magic to see if they replace extra high doors. We had our doors and drawers replaced by them appx 15 years ago and they are still going strong

I really don't want to change the doors and drawer fronts, they are solid wood in excellent condition, currently varnished.  I just want to change the colour to something a bit brighter and lighter

Would be as good to just paint them?. A careful choice of paint could transform them.

If the style of the doors won't change I woulda thought painting would be the obvious choice.

Just be aware that if your doors are the style with a wooden frame with a panel in the middle then there is likely to be movement between the panel and the frame; if you paint the door the movement will show. The doors will soon start to look a mess.

if done properly, the results look excellent.
