I'd say righty tighty, but I'd wait for a more qualified answer if I was you!

Clockwise to turn off, until you feel the valve has " seated "

It's also good practise to give your main stop-**** a few turns every six months or so - clockwise and then anticlockwise.

This prevents them from seizing up, something which you don't want to find out if you ever need to turn off the water supply in a hurry !

Spray the tap spindle with WD40 and allow it to soak in before attempting to turn it otherwise it can become too tight to turn off properly.
turn on a cold tap, bathroom or kitchin, then turn off the stopccok all the way and wait a few seconds. If you have done it correctly the tap will stop running.
hello the last person's answer is not strictly true and could be misleading .the cold water in the bathroom can sometimes be connected to the cold water tank in the loft and it would keep running and would not turn off when you turned off the stop ****.therefore only do the test he suggests by using the downstairs cold water tap at the sink
but it is sorry to stop ****should read stop ****
what a mess----should read stopcock
