We have had 3 claims in the last 5 years (not to do with the river). our area is "high risk" for flood. we live in a quarry area, meaning our immediate next door neighbour and their next door neighbours have had to have work done for subsidence in the last 10 years. That premium includes buildings, contents (unlimited for both) plus accedental damage both in the property and away from home, plus legal cover. It was the cheapest i could get!
When I tried to insure the car for Mrs DaGinge with 8 years no-claims it went up by £100 this year! I was told by the broker that the firm we were with were no longer insuring cars because they had been told by the FSA to stop or be closed down (????strange I know????) and the cheapest they could find was in fact what they had quoted! Despite trawling through all the money saving web sites, it appeared that they were in fact telling the truth as I could find nothing comparably cheaper giving the same cover. I can recommend Academy Insurance even if you just try a quote from them, what have you got to lose?
